One of the biggest questions we get asked is how long does henna hair color lasts. Henna hair dye colors typically last 4-6 weeks, and we have some customers who have it last as long as four years. Its longevity can vary based on several factors. We do have some that have reported the color lasted for several years following specific instructions, which are shared below. To maximize the lifespan of your henna color, consider the following tips:

How and Where Was it Grown?

There are thousands of crops around the globe, and the best crops produce the longest-lasting color, hands down. Nothing will ever compare to the quality of the soil and product. We tested over 200 crops to find the absolute best quality plants the world has to offer. The soil has to be replenished, and the environment and weather conditions need to be perfect. Most ingredients depend on a dry climate with very little rain until it is time to be harvested. India’s monsoon season has the perfect conditions.

Pre-Application Care:

Avoid using oils or leave-in conditioners before applying henna, as they can create a barrier that prevents the dye from fully penetrating the hair. If you’ve used oils, rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar to remove residues. Learn more about how to make your hair color last longer.

During Application:

Unless otherwise advised, mix the henna paste with tap water instead of bottled or distilled water. After mixing it, immediately apply EarthDye, no longer than 15 minutes. Additionally, ensure your hair is clean and free of any products. Brownd releases the dye molecules immediately, while reds can release dye for months to years. Freezing it decreases the life span.

Post-Application Care:

After applying henna, avoid washing your hair with shampoo for at least 48 hours to allow the color to set. Use sulfate-free and natural shampoos, as harsh chemicals can strip the color. Avoid using heat styling tools like flat irons, which can damage hair and fade the dye. Oils will also strip colors except for natural red.

Maintenance:

To maintain the vibrancy of your henna color, minimize exposure to oil and leave-in conditioners and protect your hair from excessive sun exposure. Natural plant dyes do, in fact, protect the hair from UV rays, but the sun will lighten it quickly. Perform regular touch-ups on the roots and avoid reapplying to the entire head frequently, which can lead to overly dark tones. Doing the correct hair prep will help you make your color last longer.

Following these guidelines can help extend the vibrancy and life of your henna hair color, keeping it rich and radiant for more extended periods. Our goal is to make sure everyone has a wonderful experience in looking younger and by easily doing so.
